From Hybrid Classrooms to GlobalArenas: Walter Cotito’s Path to MMA Glory

Nashua, NH — In a quiet corner of New Hampshire, one eighth-grade student is preparing to make noise on the world stage. Walter Cotito, a rising martial arts talent and student at Wellheart Public Charter School in Merrimack, will represent the United States this November at the Amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) World Championships in Loutraki, Greece. Competing in the 15-and-under division, Walter’s journey is a testament to grit, family support, and the power of flexible public education.

A Fighter’s Focus, A Student’s Balance

Walter’s training regimen is intense, but thanks to Wellheart’s innovative hybrid attendance model, he’s able to balance academics with athletic ambition. Attending school in person three days a week, Walter completes his remaining coursework from home—freeing up time for gym sessions, recovery, and mentorship from his trainers. His family plays a vital role, guiding his at-home learning and ensuring he stays on track academically while pursuing excellence in the ring.

“It’s the perfect setup,” says Walter’s mother. “He’s learning discipline in both arenas—school and sport—and the flexibility lets us support his dreams without compromising his education.”

Public Education Meets Global Opportunity

Wellheart’s hybrid model isn’t just about convenience—it’s about empowerment. For families with children pursuing specialized interests, whether in athletics, arts, or entrepreneurship, the school’s approach offers a tailored path to success. Walter’s upcoming trip to Greece isn’t just a competition—it’s an international cultural experience, a chance to meet peers from around the world, and a milestone in his personal development.

The Amateur MMA World Championships, held November 5–9, will bring together youth athletes from dozens of countries. Walter will compete in the U15 division, showcasing the skills he’s honed through years of dedication and the support of a community that believes in his potential.

A Model for the Future

As public education evolves, Wellheart Charter School stands as a beacon for what’s possible when flexibility meets accountability. Walter’s story is more than a local success—it’s a glimpse into how schools can adapt to nurture talent, honor family values, and prepare students for both high school and the world beyond.

“The Wellheart education model allows young people to pursue excellence in both academics and in other interests and pursuits, and Walter is an excellent example of that” says Director of Wellheart Tim Galitski.

“It’s been a joy watching Walter engage in hands on learning the three days he’s at Wellheart” says Wellheart Founder Emily Wiete. “Walter has integrated well, made close connections with his peers and teacher and is so kind to the younger kids. We are very proud of all that he has accomplished as an incredible athlete and we look forward to seeing all he will accomplish in the classroom this year.”
